The Idea of a University

The University of Cambridge Faculty of Divinity appointed Onespacemedia to brand and create a commmunity website for a two-year interdisciplinary faith project examining the relationship between a research university and religion.

Branding inspiration

The brief for the Idea of a University branding was to create a logo that included religious symbolism and architectural features of University of Cambridge buildings. Drawing inspiration from stained glass windows, the roof detail of Kings College Chapel and the University shield, our design team created an elegant serif typographic logo with an architectural marque that also works as a tessellating pattern, providing a graphical branding system that can be used across a wide range of materials.

Empowering debate

As well as providing resources, information on events and a regular newsletter, The Idea of a University website was designed to foster debate around a central question, “What place does religion have in the Western research university?".

The website’s primary function was to provide project contributors with a simple-to-use blogging system from which to publish articles and research. Articles are promoted through social media and a regular HTML newsletter and readers are encouraged to interact and join the debate by adding comments to articles. The website also provides information on the project including the team, downloadable resources and information on related events. A dedicated section on the project’s closing conference was also created. As well as being simple to update through our powerful CMS the website features an original typographical design that incorporates University of Cambridge branding whilst retaining the originality of the Idea of a University brand.

"The Idea of a University project introduced our team to working with theology and religion - it proved to be a fascinating project. With a large collection of articles and resources and steady stream of engagement from its community, the Idea of a University project has been a resounding success."
